Reviewing category data before drawing a market conclusion

Audit category definitions, periods, price basis, revisions and alternative explanations before using Australian retail data in a market conclusion.

Before a category figure supports a market conclusion, reconstruct the claim from its source. Check what it counts, its period and comparison basis, revisions, and plausible alternative explanations. Write the conclusion only as broadly as those checks allow.

Reconstruct the figure

Record the publication, table, exact category label, unit, geography, release date and reference period. Note whether the figure is a level, a month-on-month change or a year-on-year change. A monthly fall and annual growth can both be true.

The ABS August 2026 Monthly Household Spending Indicator reports total household spending flat at 0.0% from July, current-price and seasonally adjusted. This is an Australia-wide total, not a Clothing and footwear category figure. It does not show whether spending changed at particular retailers or in a particular product category.

Check the series and basis

The household indicator groups spending by consumption purpose. Its scope differs from Retail Trade turnover estimates for retail businesses, so the two series do not measure the same thing. Monthly household spending statistics have moved to the MHSI, and Retail Trade, Australia ceased after the June 2025 reference period; check the series before extending an older chart.

Current-price spending reflects prices and measured volume. The household indicator publishes it monthly, while chain-volume measures are quarterly. A monthly current-price decline is not a monthly volume estimate. Original and seasonally adjusted observations serve different comparisons, so name the basis used.

MHSI vs Retail Trade Turnover: Key Differences in Scope and Series

Retail Business Turnover
Turnover reported by retail businesses (ceased after June 2025)
Reporting Frequency

Audit the proposed comparison

  1. Boundary:Do the observations cover the same product category or retailer industry and geography?
  2. Time:Are the periods comparable, including seasons and selling days?
  3. Basis:Do units, price treatment and seasonal adjustment match?
  4. Coverage:Did a source, classification or reporting population change?
  5. Revision:Is the earlier observation taken from the current release or an older snapshot?
  6. Alternatives:Could prices, mix, promotions, availability or an event affect the movement?

A mismatch may require a narrower statement or separate observations.

Audit Checklist for Valid Market Conclusions Using ABS Data

  • Boundary: Same product category and geography?Ensure alignment between household spending and retail data
  • Time: Comparable periods including seasons?Check for seasonal variations and number of selling days
  • Basis: Matching units, price treatment, adjustment?Confirm current-price vs chain-volume, seasonal adjustment
  • Coverage: Changes in classification or population?Verify no shifts in survey scope or definitions
  • Revision: Current release or older snapshot?Use most recent official release
  • Alternatives: Prices, mix, promotions, events?Consider external factors influencing trends

State what survived

The August total-spending figure supports a statement about that month’s published, seasonally adjusted current-price household spending overall. It cannot establish a category-specific result. A sustained downturn, changed customer preference or particular store result needs further evidence.
